Bret Hart Buries Vince McMahon Over Montreal Screwjob

Bret Hart Buries Vince McMahon

Bret Hart talks about the Montreal Screw and says he does not have any regrets for punching Vince McMahon, saying it is the thing he is most proud of. A WWF Hall of Fame member and a well-known wrestler, Hart is known as one of the best in wrestling history. McMahon betrayed Hart while he was in the middle of a match. The match was scheduled to Bret’s understanding, but Vince changed everything in the middle of the fight, which triggered the Champion.

Reason for Bret Hart’s Behaviour

Reason of Bret Hart's Behaviour

One thing that will forever remain a part of wrestling legend Bret Hart’s life is the event often referred to as the Montreal Screwjob, or one of the most infamous events in wrestling history. In 1997 Bret suffered from a WWE management betrayal by McMahon. Before the match, they informed him he was going to win but during the match, the referee interfered with that plan and terminated the match in the favour of his opponent. This led Hart to go berserk and spit on McMahon right on television.

In an interview with the Attitude Era Podcast, Hart expressed his emotion about the so-called “Montreal Screwjob.” He cried after WWE cheated him out of a match. He felt that after all of the good he has done for the company his loyalty was not reciprocated by McMahon.

Bret Hart is Proud of Himself

Nonetheless, in all that mess, according to Hart, he has never been prouder of what he did later, when he knocked out Vince McMahon, backstage. He stated that he was proud of what he did after his experience at Survivor Series 1997. He also heard people condemn his deeds, for instance, when The Undertaker claimed that WWE had done nothing wrong. Shortly after the match, Hart left WWE.

Hart also gave some details of what happened behind the scenes. One day Vince McMahon arrived at the locker room to ‘set Hart straight’ and the two subsequently engaged in a genuine fight. An impressive punch of the right hand was thrown by Bret and connected to Vince’s jaw which made him almost fly off the ground. Bret himself was hurt and ended up with a broken hand. Bret concluded, “It was the best punch I ever threw. I wouldn’t change a thing. Vince McMahon can rot in hell.”

Final Thoughts

Betraying someone this important is a very harsh step to take. Vince McMahon might have reasons to do so, but changing everything in the middle of the match can be catastrophic and it can lead a loss by a great champion such as Bret Hart.
