In a historic first for the MotoGP calendar, Asia’s country, Thailand has finally been confirmed officially for the hosting of the new season opener of 2025 instead of Qatar. The first race in the calendar year will be the Thai Grand Prix which will be held at the Buriram International Circuit on the 2nd of March.
This change not only redesigns the role of Thailand as the key participant in MotoGP cycles but also allows for the conclusion of the tradition connected with Qatar as a location for the initial race in the season which has been going on for nearly two decades.
Change of Scene: Thailand Replacing Qatar
Since the year 1998, Qatar has remained the preferred location for commencing the MotoGP season. Nevertheless, a slight deviation from this trend is expected next year as Buriram takes up the duties of hosting the first race of the 2025 season. The Buriram venue was conceptually part of the flyaway races on the Asia- Oceania circuits normally held in October and will witness the first race of the season during the early part of March.
The above decision that Qatar has shifted the race to a later date probably aimed to stay away from the holy month of Ramadan. While the new date of the Losail race has not been determined yet, the shift suggests that the MotoGP calendar is subject to a major revamp. MotoGP is planning to carry out its major pre-season test for next year in Thailand since Qatar is not beginning the season. That way, teams, and riders can practice and get a feel of the Buriram circuit putting into practice any techniques or strategies they may wish for the start of the season.

Thailand, on top of this, has also been granted the right to tender the Season of MotoGP in the year 2026. This two-year deal was reached between Dorna Sports, the promoter for the circuit, and Thai authorities to underscore the region’s strategic position regarding the MotoGP in Southeast Asia.
Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports, expressed his enthusiasm for the change, he stated that,
We are very excited to reveal that the 2025 and 2026 season openers will be the Thai Grand Prix at Buriram. Southeast Asia is one of our most important markets, both for the sport and for our factories and partners.
Conclusion
Thailand thus became the first country in Southeast Asia to host MotoGP in the seasons of 2025 and 2026 thus marking a shift in the motor racing calendar that has seen the southeast region increasingly embraced by motor racing. Having always received a warm welcome from the fans and being heavily associated with MotoGP, Buriram will become the venue of the new season, displacing Qatar as the season opener.
They not only proved Thailand’s increasing importance to the MotoGP racing circuit but also correlated with the region’s steady encroachment on the sport’s business and reliability approaches. This enthusiasm has received positive approval statements such as those from Carmelo Ezpeleta, the CEO of Dorna Sports who is positive that the Thai Grand Prix will set the tempo for the season in anticipation of an electrifying atmosphere.
