NASCAR Revives Legendary Track For 2025

NASCAR

NASCAR has a rich history in the South, starting with moonshining and eventually becoming a full-fledged multibillion-dollar sport. Over the last number of years, NASCAR has been slowly returning to its roots with the return of North Wilkesboro for the All-Star race each year. Now, NASCAR one-ups itself for the 2025 Cup season opener, with the Busch Clash returning to a track NASCAR has not been to in over half a century.

Bowman Gray Stadium

For the 2025 Clash, the Cup series will return to the famous 1/4 mile track. Bowman Grey Stadium is a completely flat track. A style of track NASCAR left long ago but will now make a long-awaited return. Bowman Grey Stadium was the first weekly track for the sport in 1958. The Cup series would race there every year until 1971. The first race was won by Bob Welborn, who won the final three championships of the NASCAR convertible series in 1956, 1957, and 1958. The last race was won by 1983 Cup Champion Bobby Allison in 1971.

Ben Kennedy, NASCAR’s Senior Vice President President of racing development and strategy, told the media in a press conference:

Bowman Gray Stadium has a storied history in motorsports, so we look forward to bringing the Cup Series back to this revered racetrack for the first time since 1971, As NASCAR’s first weekly racetrack, Bowman Gray Stadium holds a special place as the original home to grassroots racing. With a history of intense competition, we are proud to host the Clash at the ‘the Madhouse.’

Bowman Grey Stadium was built in 1937 as a public works project to help create jobs during the Great Depression. The first event to happen was a football game between Duke and Wake Forest, in which the Blue Devils won 67-0. In 1939, a dirt track was added to the stadium, which was later paved in 1947. The nearly century-old track has so much history that to this day, modifieds still run at Bowman Grey Stadium.

NASCAR Thankfully Caves To Fans

Fans of this great sport are very nostalgic. Anywhere you go, people will tell you how great the Cup Series was back in the day. NASCAR is continuing a positive trend of getting tracks that were long forgotten back in the schedule. They have made North Wilkesboro the All-Star race in 2022 and now to Bowman Grey for the Clash in 2025, replacing Olympic Stadium (where USC plays its home games) as the venue for the event.

The short track style will heat tempers just in time for the Daytona 500. The little room for racing and the lack of banking makes the track a one-lane track, forcing drivers to use the bump-and-run or, in desperate measures, use the Chrome Horn. However, we have many tempers yet to flare this year, and any ill feelings drivers have towards one another can be settled in the legendary Bowmen Grey Stadium or maybe the infield. We will have to find out then.
