The class of 92 played a pivotal role in Manchester United’s dominance during the 1990s and early 2000s, when they won an astonishing 20+ trophies and a treble (UEFA Champions League, The Premier League, and FA Cup) for the club.
Erik Ten Hag’s Commitment to Youth Development
Erik Ten Hag has a history of giving significance to youth development wherever he has managed. Ajax is a clear example of how, under his management, the team became the UEFA Champions League semi-finalists in 2019. At least six or eight players starting in the Eredivisie side were promoted from the youth to the first team. Similarly, he has kept that alive for Manchester United as well. Several players have not only been featured from the youth but have also performed when given the chance.
Old youth promoters were already starters before Erik’s arrival, but they still feature significantly. Marcus Rashford was Manchester United’s top goal scorer with 42 goals and assists in Ten Hag’s debut season. Scott Mctominay has featured regularly, and Johnny Evans, who was once promoted from the youth team by Sir Alex Ferguson, still counts as a homegrown player for Manchester United.
Despite the off-pitch controversy surrounding Mason Greenwood, who was also promoted from the Manchester United academy, Ten Hag tried his best to include him in his plans and utilize his amazing talent. However, the Manchester United Women’s football team refused the idea, resulting in his eventual sale to Marseille.
Key Players Emerging Under Ten Hag
Erik Ten Hag is not afraid of throwing a youngster into the fold, even if the youngster is at the expense of a big name or a regular starter. The Dutchman has handed debuts to a host of academy players to cement the club’s future in the long run. Key players such as the emergence of Alejandro Garnacho have been important for the Red Devils, whether as a starter or as a substitute. The Argentine scored 16 goals for Manchester United and is 19 years old.
He has many important goals in dire situations, making him a clear asset for the club. Another name that was promoted by Ten Hag two years ago but did not feature much in the 22/23 season due to injury worries was Kobbie Mainoo. One can’t argue that he has been one of Manchester United’s best players since last season. Equipped with amazing talent and skill at the age of 19, Mainoo is a prime asset for not only Manchester United but also a regular first-team player for the England National Team as well.
Several other youth players have been in the mix as well. Among those are Charlie McNeill, Dan Gore, Omari Forson, Harry Amas, who had a brilliant pre-season, and Toby Collyer. There is a high chance that these two will feature in some first-team football this season.
Manchester United also benefited from some much-needed sales, as Willy Kambwala, promoted last year by the Dutchman, showed great promise in some of the first-team football he was given in the Premier League. That earned him a move to Villareal FC and granted Manchester United some funds from sales they had been looking for. Youth Development will continue to be a part of Manchester United for generations.
