Breaking News: 7x National Championship College Football Coach Announces Retirement
The University of Alabama has been synonymous with college football for decades. From the days of Paul “Bear” Bryant roaming the sidelines to Gene Stallings taking the Crimson Tide to the National Championship to their incredible run under Nick Saban, Alabama has dominated the college football landscape. Today marked the end of an era.
The college football world has been rocked by seven-time national championship coach Nick Saban’s abrupt retirement announcement on Wednesday afternoon. It had been speculated he would walk away if his Alabama program were to win another national title, but not many people took that speculation seriously. Nick Saban himself even laughed off the idea when asked about the rumor the other day.
I guess we should have recognized that he didn’t say the rumor wasn’t true.
Nick Saban by the Numbers
The 72-year-old Nick Saban is retiring and College Football will never be the same. For 17 years, he patrolled the sidelines in Tuscaloosa, instilling fear in every fan base he faced. During his tenure, Saban won 6 college football national championships. He finishes his career with 7 college football national championships to his credit, having won a title while with LSU in 2003.
Under Nick Saban, in 2009 and 2020, Alabama teams finished undefeated 2 times. The Crimson Tide won the Southeastern Conference West Division 10 times and won the SEC Championship an incredible 9 times. During the 17 years he spent as the Alabama Head Coach, he produced 44 1st round NFL Draft selections.
All dynasties come to an end, and Alabama football under Nick Saban is no different.
