The history books were forever changed last night as Shohei Ohtani became the sixth person in MLB history to join the 40/40 club. His emergence into the club came in typical Ohtani fashion as his 40th home run of the season had dramatic flair.
In a tied game going into the bottom of the ninth, bases were loaded as Ohtani stepped up to the plate. With one crack of the bat, he launched a missile to right-center field. A walk-off grand slam sent the Dodgers to victory and opened the door to the exclusive club for Ohtani. With 33 games left in the season, will Ohtani be the first player in MLB history to be a part of the 50/50 club?
50/50 On The Horizon
Ohtani not only became a part of the prestigious club last night, he became the fastest player in the history of MLB to do so. The incredible feat was accomplished in his 126th game of the season. The second fastest player to do it was Alfonso Soriano in 2006. He achieved this milestone in 147 games. His record-breaking home run marked the third time in four years he has reached 40 or more homers in a season.
With over a month left in the season, 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases seem feasible for the phenom as he is on pace for exactly that. Though the accomplishment is just in reach, he is keeping his focus on winning games and bringing a World Series to Los Angeles. In a post-game interview with Doug McKain, Ohtani was asked about his thoughts on potentially becoming the first player in history to become a part of the 50/50 club.
“The most important thing is to contribute to winning the game, and the closer I get to 50/50, the more I’m contributing to the team winning,” Ohtani said. “If that’s how it is then I’m happy for that.”
Ohtani Breaking Records
Ohtani is no stranger to shattering records. He is constantly making his mark on the league and proving why he is one of the best players to ever do it. The 40/40 milestone was accomplished while simultaneously rehabbing a UCL tear after undergoing Tommy John Surgery last year, making this feat that much more impressive.
Because of his impressive debut season with the Dodgers, Ohtani is up for many awards and accolades. With his performance at the plate and on the basepaths, he has a chance to be the National League MVP, a feat he has accomplished twice in the American League.
In addition to another potential MVP season, Ohtani has a chance to bring home the Triple Crown award. A big hurdle standing in his way is the Atlanta Braves’ Marcell Ozuna, who leads the National League in many categories at the plate. Ohtani has had a minor slump in August which has moved him down in Triple Crown categories, however, his recent record-breaking attainment still puts him at the front of the MVP race.
Dodgers Moving Forward
The Dodgers look to take the momentum of last night’s historic happenings and steal another victory from the Tampa Bay Rays while moving to 78-52 on the year. As Ohtani works to get on base and produce for Los Angeles, the Dodgers are working to finish the season strong as October hastily approaches.
