49ers RB Christian McCaffrey To Miss Week 2

49ers

Things just got quite a bit more interesting for the San Francisco 49ers heading into their Week 2 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. It’s now official that running back Christian McCaffrey won’t be able to go in this week’s contest. But it gets even more serious, there’s a possibility that McCaffrey might just be placed on IR, which could rule him out for at least four more games. The development is a big one for the 49ers and their season plans.

McCaffrey’s Injury Issues

Christian McCaffrey, one of the top running backs for the 49ers, has been working his way through a calf strain that first appeared at the start of training camp. He missed all of the preseason and was a late scratch in the Week 1 game. Since then, coach Kyle Shanahan has said McCaffrey’s injury has taken a turn for the worse recently, forcing the team to consider putting him on IR. If that’s the case, McCaffrey would not return until Week 6 at the earliest. This would be a big setback for the 49ers, with them heavily depending on McCaffrey.

It’s about to get real for the 49ers. In the next four games, they’re going to play host to the Minnesota Vikings, Los Angeles Rams, and New England Patriots before heading to Arizona to take on the Cardinals. Most of that stretch will require them to figure out how to stay competitive without McCaffrey. McCaffrey will have a chance to come back for Thursday’s Week 6 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. By then, he may be back, or he could show up on October 20 in the biggest markedly hyped game of the year against the Kansas City Chiefs.

With McCaffrey out, the 49ers will turn to Jordan Mason, who should see a much bigger role. Mason was tremendous in his first career start, rushing 28 times for 147 yards and a touchdown. He showed he could handle a heavy workload, making him a key player for the 49ers in McCaffrey’s absence. If McCaffrey goes on IR, Mason will probably be the 49ers’ lead back for several weeks.

The 49ers’ Game Plan Going Forward

The game plan will look different for the 49ers sans McCaffrey. Mason is serviceable, but it would behoove them to investigate other ways in which they can produce offensively. Perhaps there’s an increase in passing plays or a change in formation to better utilize all of their other offensive weapons. Without their lead back, creativity will play a factor in the coaching staff of the 49ers as they try to continue to keep the offense going.

While the injury news for McCaffrey, then, is alarming, the hope is that perhaps he can return sooner rather than later. The 49ers haven’t yet sent McCaffrey to IR, a sign they’re still trying to get him back on the field this season. They will continue to monitor his progress and hope his recovery speeds up. If McCaffrey can return before the end of his potential IR stint, it would be massive for the 49ers.

Conclusion

This could be a real blow to the San Francisco 49ers as they start preparing for Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings. In a year that could very well see McCaffrey spend some time on injured reserve, San Francisco will have to look at Jordan Mason and other changes if they want to keep up with the high level of performance.

This means fantasy football managers should be paying attention to Mason’s role and preparing for the long-term absence of McCaffrey. The 49ers’ ability to adapt and find success without their star running back will be key as they proceed through the coming games.
