3’s A Crowd For Hopeful Denver Broncos

A year after parting ways with Russell Wilson, and paying him nearly 38 million to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Denver Broncos are keeping three quarterbacks on their initial 53-man roster for the 2024-2025 NFL season.

Safety First

In a profession with a 100% injury rate, the Denver Broncos have secured their insurance policy by keeping starting rookie Bo Nix, and backups Jarrett Stidham and Zac Wilson, who is in football rehab following his 3 year stint with the New York Jets. Head Coach Sean Payton has been saying throughout the preseason that he “likes the room”. Even with the coach’s support, there was a sense that this was a tactic to spark trade interest for either Stidham or Wilson. By the time of the 2p.m. cut deadline, all three quarterbacks were on the roster and saved from a trade or the waiver wire.

George Paton, Broncos General Manager, met with the media this afternoon and explained the decision.  “Yeah, we think highly of the quarterback room,” Paton said. “All these guys support each other. They compete. They work well together. We looked at last year, almost half the league kept three quarterbacks. We think that number will increase, we’re glad to have all three.”

Playing quarterback in the National Football League is one of the most difficult positions in all of sport. Starting a rookie—even one with over 60 collegiate games under his belt—in the first game is a risk for the organization.  Keeping all three quarterbacks provides a safety net against injury or poor play from Nix.

3’s A Crowd

In the eight years since their victory in Super Bowl 50, the Denver Broncos have had one winning season, marking their longest losing streak since the 1960s. In the years since Super Bowl 50 the search for a starting quarterback has been frustrating, with the Broncos cycling through 13 different starters since Hall of Famer Peyton Manning retired.  The Broncos’ failure to succeed, however, can’t be blamed solely on the quarterbacks. The entire roster has been in shambles for nearly a decade. This is what makes the decision to keep three quarterbacks especially intriguing, given the team’s glaring needs in other areas like cornerback, pass rusher, and center

Sean Paton considers himself to better at picking and developing quarterbacks than anyone else in the NFL. Payton emphasized his confidence at the scouting combine in February, saying, ‘I think we’ll be really good at this… And to some degree, we’re glad that a lot of people aren’t.” Building an NFL roster is a complicated and difficult task.  Building a roster for the Denver Broncos may be more difficult than most.   This roster needs more athletes on the field that can impact a game.  The last thing this team needs is another guy with a visor, headset and a play sheet.  Sean Paton is really good at that.  Three’s a crowd in most places, but especially in the Denver Broncos’ quarterback room.  https://gty.im/2167680832
