32 Year Drought Continues For San Francisco 49ers After Week 2 Loss To Minnesota

The San Francisco 49ers dominated in week 1. They had a much more difficult time in week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings. One of the storylines going into the matchup was how long it has been since the team has won in Minnesota. The last time the 49ers won in Minnesota was week 15 of the 1992 season. They had a chance to end the drought, but it will continue after the current NFC North leader dominated San Francisco.

San Francisco 49ers Can’t Win In Minnesota

The San Francisco 49ers gave up some big plays on Sunday. A 97-yard touchdown pass to Justin Jefferson was one of the highlights of the day. Brock Purdy lost a fumble and threw an interception, which helped Minnesota hang on for the victory. Last week, the 49ers’ offense had little trouble ending drives with points against the Jets. This was not the case today. Brian Flores dialed up the right plays at the right times, and the 49ers were held scoreless in the first and third quarters.

The box score doesn’t look bad for the San Francisco 49ers. Despite the turnovers, Brock Purdy still threw for over 300 yards and a touchdown. Backup running back Jordan Mason had another strong outing, rushing for 100 yards and a score. Minnesota is known for being one of the toughest places to play, and San Francisco could never find a rhythm. We would have to go back to when Steve Young was starting for the team to get to the last time the 49ers left the state of Minnesota victorious.

Wild Day In The NFL

The results today, including this game, are what makes the NFL great. Many had the San Francisco 49ers steamrolling the Vikings. Instead, Minnesota controlled the game. However, this was far from the most shocking result of the day. The Las Vegas Raiders came back to beat the Baltimore Ravens. The New Orleans Saints shellacked the Dallas Cowboys on the road. Seattle needed overtime to beat the Patriots, and the Packers beat the Colts with Malik Willis under center.

Records like this one are interesting. It is wild to think the San Francisco 49ers haven’t won in Minnesota in 32 years. Since the Vikings are not always on the schedule for the 49ers, this drought will continue for the team. More importantly, San Francisco drops a game that many had penciled in as a win early in the season. If this team is looking to get back to the Super Bowl, they have some things to work on.
