People often talk about born leaders. This refers to individuals who demonstrate great poise, charisma, and decision-making when it matters most. People sometimes think that an individual who possesses those qualities must have been born that way, born to lead. In reality, not one person is born as a leader. People might be born into a leadership situation such as royal families, or the children of parents in strong leadership roles. There lies the key to leadership. Great leaders must go through some pretty hard times and find a way to navigate through them to learn what it takes to lead others through similar situations in the future.

In the case of the Chicago Bears, maybe these are the hard times they are going through to develop better leadership and learn from it. Maybe, it’s an ego check for some elder statesmen on the coaching staff and in the front office. Maybe, it’s the growing pains of trying to change the culture of a franchise from the ground up. The important questions are: will the players, coaches, and executives be able to recognize the learning opportunities in front of them? Will they be able to band together to learn from them collectively before getting fired or having people within the organization turn on them?

The Chicago Bears need players to emerge as leaders on this team. They need a steadying force to help them hold the ship upright when the waters get turbulent. The Chicago Bears coaching staff needs to empower those leaders with decision-making capabilities on the field and not hamstring them with mistrust, vindictive actions, or narcissism. Let the players police themselves if strong leaders come forth. The coaches have lost the locker room and need to earn back the trust of their players.
