For seven seasons, Kansas City Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been in the NFL, and for six of those seasons, he has been to the playoffs. Mahomes and the Chiefs have been to the Super Bowl four times out of that six. Three of those times, the Kansas City Chiefs and Mahomes were victorious in winning the Super Bowl. Mahomes was MVP in all three Super Bowls. Also, he was MVP of the league in 2018 and 2022. So, you could say Mahomes is the man to beat. The two-time Super Bowl MVP has been consistently going above and beyond expectations. However, when you are at the top of the mountain, some want to stake their claim as the best, too.
Last regular season, Mahomes finished sixth in passing yards and threw for 4,183 yards, with 27 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Mahomes finished the regular season with a QBR of 63.1 and a passing rate of 92.6. Unlike the previous season, Mahomes ranked number one (79) in the league. Last season’s QBR and passing rate was the lowest of Mahomes’ career. Is there blood in the water? Is the Chiefs quarterback on the downslope of his greatness? Most would say no, considering Mahomes’ age. So, which quarterbacks could dethrone Patrick Mahomes this season?
Lamar Jackson vs Mahomes

Last season in the NFL Playoffs, the Baltimore Ravens went head-up against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Conference championship game. The Chiefs won that game to move on to win the Super Bowl. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is quite too familiar with falling to the Chiefs. When up against the Chiefs, Jackson is 1-4, but as far as QBR, Jackson finished the regular season fourth while the Super Bowl MVP champion finished eighth. In passing rating, Jackson finished fourth with 102.7, while Mahomes finished 14th with 92.6.
Although, the Chiefs quarterback finished with more yards, touchdowns, and the Super Bowl title. Lamar Jackson could be one of the QBs who can take down Mahomes. During the offseason, the Ravens signed running back Derrick Henry to a two-year 16 million dollar contract. The addition should give the Ravens more of a threat on the run game to give Jackson more opportunities to go throw downfield instead of using his legs for first downs. Jackson hasn’t made it to the Super Bowl stage yet in his career. Jackson has won the league MVP twice in 2019 and 2023.
Josh Allen vs Mahomes
Another quarterback to consider is Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. No team has suffered more in the playoffs against the Chiefs than the Bills. Each time the Bills have faced the Chiefs in the playoffs they have failed to beat them. Bills have had success beating the Chiefs during the regular season but when it has counted Mahomes and the Chiefs have never fallen to the Bills. In last year’s playoffs in the AFC Divisional round Bills missed a field goal to tie the game, resulting in a K.C. win.
There are three things that hurt Allen’s chances to surpass the Chiefs quarterback this season, and these are very critical spots in the numbers. First one is turnovers, Josh Allen threw 18 interceptions last season which landed him second in the league with the most thrown picks. The second one is completions, Allen placed 11th 66% in that area right above quarterback Russell Wilson. The last is passing rating, he ranked 16th with a 92.2 in the league, Allen threw 4,306 yards last season. Also, tied fifth in touchdowns with 29. NFL experts question Allen’s decision-making, but if he makes better decisions with the ball, results could be way better and in his favor.
Tagovailoa vs Mahomes
This one took a minute. I had to consider which teams could legitimately be in a position not to win against the Chiefs, win a Super Bowl, and have their quarterback shine. Even when the Chiefs didn’t take the Vince Lombardi trophy, Mahomes was still making noise. My final quarterback is Miami Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa; now hear me out, Dallas Cowboys fans, cause I can hear you now.
Tagovailoa passed for 4,624 yards last season, the top spot. He also completed 69% of his passes, landing him in the number-five spot. Also, in the fifth spot was his passing rating at 101.1 and a QBR of 60.8, which ranked him 10th. The Miami quarterback threw 14 inceptions, and so did Mahomes. The Dolphins quarterback threw 29 touchdowns last season, ranking him fifth again in another category. The Miami Dolphins have one of the fastest duo wideouts in the league, along with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. The Dolphins signed wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and Wille Sneed IV for a one-year deal. More weapons, right?
Any given Sunday, you can win or lose in football. However, winning and building on it over and over again only some have completed. Mahomes has made a trend of that throughout his career, but as much as some want to see him win. There are some who are coming not only to give the Chiefs an L but to rip Super Bowl Champ off the mantle as well. We shall see. The season is coming soon.
