The Houston Texans may face their toughest game yet as they prepare for the Bills’ visit in week 5. What appears to be a Superbowl contender showed some kinks in the armor after a heavy beating to the Ravens. Buffalo is still a strong team, though, and the Houston Texans will have trouble beating them unless they can accomplish several things.
Blitz Josh Allen often
Part of why the Ravens were able to dismantle the Bills was the pressure they put on Josh Allen. The Buffalo quarterback was sacked three times and completed only 16 of his 29 passes. Until that point, Josh Allen was looking like the best quarterback in the league (he might still be honestly), so it looks like getting him on the ground is the only way to stop him.
The Houston Texans defense is also suited for a blitz-heavy game plan in an odd way. They have seen strong play from cornerbacks Devin Stingley Jr. and Karami Lassiter. This means that, if need be, they can handle the Buffalo wide receivers in single coverage while other defenders rush the quarterback.
Houston Texans Can Feed Joe Mixon
The other reason why the Ravens beat the Bills is simple: Derrick Henry went Derrick Henry on them. He was one yard shy of the 200-yard mark, and combined with Lamar Jackson, the team had 271 yards on the ground.
Although Mixon did not practice on Thursday, the Texans coaching staff is hopeful that he can suit up for this game against the Bills. Joe Mixon, when healthy, is capable of going Derrick Henry on them, so feed him early and often.
Spread the Ball Around
This will be the first game in a while for the Houston Texans where the triple receiver attack (Collins, Diggs and Dell) are all healthy for one game. At this point, the Bills are probably most worried about what Nico Collins can do with the ball, seeing as he’s had a phenomenal season so far.
One sure way to stop double coverages from crippling Nico Collins is to feed the other receivers. Tank Dell has yet to have a stand-out performance this year, and Stefon Diggs would love to ball out against his former team. This will be a battle for the Houston Texans.
If quarterback C.J. Stroud can spread the ball to the other weapons on his team, then the Bills defense can’t afford to simply take away Collins. Once they start using different defense packages, whether that be blitz heavy, cover two, zone, etc., then Stroud can hit Collins for those big plays that they’ve been executing week in and week out.
