The Detroit Lions will travel to Houston to play the Texans in what should be a great Sunday Night Football game. The Lions just defeated the Packers, demonstrating their ability to play in bad weather. The defense performed admirably, giving up just 14 points and forcing Jordan Love to throw a pick-six.
The Texans are coming off a bad loss to the Jets on Thursday Night Football where CJ Stroud and the offense struggled. They were able to put up just 13 points, despite their defense giving up just 21. This game is expected to be a very close battle, and if the Detroit Lions want to win, they will need to complete these 3 things.
Don’t Let CJ Stroud Connect With Tank Dell
With Stefon Diggs out for the season and Wide Receiver Nico Collins likely out this week for the Texans, Tank Dell will once again be the lone star. Dell has just 355 yards this season, but he is coming off a night where he had 126 yards. CJ Stroud will look to get into a groove early with Dell, so Carlton Davis and Terrion Arnold will need to make sure that doesn’t happen.
This season, Davis has excelled with the Detroit Lions, and Arnold has recently looked fantastic as well. Arnold will probably be playing most of the snaps against Dell, so he needs to have one of his best games of the year. If the Detroit Lions want to win this game, they will need to stop Stroud and Dell from having a big game.
Get Into a Rhythm Early On Offense
The Detroit Lions offense this season has been excellent, and they will need to establish a rhythm early on to maintain their success. Jameson Williams will return this weekend, giving Jared Goff, who has been incredibly efficient this season, another weapon. He has to start like he has, connecting with his receivers early on and making nearly no errors.
David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs must also keep playing the way they have, running the ball through every team they have faced and relieving pressure on Jared Goff. Taylor Decker, the Detroit Lions starting left tackle could be out, but Detroit shouldn’t have a big problem because the Texans are probably going to be without Will Anderson Jr. If the Detroit Lions want to win this game, getting the offense going early will be a huge factor to their success.
Stop Joe Mixon
Joe Mixon, who averages 101 yards and a touchdown a game, has been excellent for Houston this season. He’s coming off a 106-yard performance against the Jets and shows no signs of slowing down. In recent weeks, the Detroit Lions run defense has been struggling, giving up big games to Josh Jacobs and Aaron Jones.
Since Aidan Hutchinson’s injury, they have struggled to defend the run, but now that Za’Darius Smith is with the Detroit Lions, he should help them. Smith may or may not play this weekend, but if he does, he should have a significant impact on the Lions’ ability to prevent Mixon from having an excellent game. If the Lions want to win this game, stopping Joe Mixon will help their chances.
