#24 Michigan Wolverines @ #22 Illinois Fighting Illini Preview

The Illinois Fighting Illini host the Michigan Wolverines in a marquee matchup.

The Illinois Fighting Illini and Michigan Wolverines will face off in a ranked Big Ten bout Saturday afternoon. This is the first time both squads come into this game ranked in the top 25 since 2001. Michigan enters off a bye and Illinois comes in after a scary overtime victory at home over the Purdue Boilermakers. The Orange Krush are hoping to make this one of the most hostile home environments for the Illinois football program in recent memory.

The defending National Champions have had to go down some tough roads this season as they try to replace and substitute so many components from their 2024 CFP championship squad. First and foremost among these needs has been quarterback. The Michigan Wolverines are on their third starting quarterback with the seventh-year veteran Jack Tuttle and Sherrone Moore is hoping that Tuttle can manage his offense to a win and get the Wolverines closer to their 2023 form. Illinois Fighting Illini Head Coach Bret Bielema is hoping for a program-defining win for the Illinois Fighting Illini at home to keep their slim CFP hopes alive.

Line Of Scrimmage Referendum

When Illinois and Michigan take the field on Saturday afternoon, the line of scrimmage will play a huge role in defining who prevails with a victory and who will lose their spot in the AP Top 25. Michigan’s ability to dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the football characterized their rise throughout the Jim Harbaugh era. As they traverse their first season under Moore, their struggle to retain this identity has been a constant battle.

For Bret Bielema and the Illinois Fighting Illini, he has preached and recruited toward a strong presence up front at the line of scrimmage but hasn’t seen his efforts reflected on the field. The offense has had trouble running the ball and protecting Luke Altmyer in the passing game, and the defense has faced its fair share of struggles in defending the run, a staple of the Michigan offense with Donovan Edwards and Kalel Mullings in the backfield.

The Michigan Wolverines come into this matchup as the favorite and their advantage up front has much to do with that. Despite needing to replace their offensive line in 2024, the big boys up front have a clear superiority over the Illinois Fighting Illini defensive front. On the other side of the football, Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham have been two of the best players in the Big Ten this year, and against an unproven Illinois Fighting Illini offensive line, the Michigan front hopes to wreak havoc on the Illini offense and disrupting their schemes.

Quarterback Size-Up

While Michigan enjoys an advantage on the line of scrimmage, Illinois has the edge when it comes to signal callers. The Michigan Wolverines have shuttled three different quarterbacks in under center so far in 2024, with Jack Tuttle getting the nod on Saturday afternoon. The seventh-year veteran has shown some sparks with his play so far after Davis Warren and Alex Orji had their chances to solidify the job. Tuttle hasn’t shown anything that would lead fans to have supreme confidence in the passing game but is the best shot Michigan thinks they have at prevailing this week and staying ranked.

Illinois does not have the same problem as Michigan. Luke Altmyer has made marked improvements to his game and has put the Fighting Illini offense on his back to get Illinois to where they are today. He presents a clear advantage for Illinois and will be the focus of the Wolverines defense and DC ‘Wink’ Martindale. If Altmyer can handle the pressure and make quick, decisive decisions with poise, he will give the Illinois Fighting Fighting Illini their best shot at staying competitive and keeping the home crowd involved in the game.

Huge Coaching Matchup

The coaches from these schools come in with similar philosophies but different backgrounds. Bret Bielema has been a head coach multiple times and has been under the tutelage of some terrific pioneers in the collegiate coaching profession. His stints as head coach haven’t turned up the way he would like and he finds himself turning around an Illinois team in his fourth season at the helm. After some ups and downs in Champaign, this season is turning into the type of year Bielema can hang his hat on and build off of. His prowess and ability are re-entering the national spotlight against Michigan.

Sherrone Moore was in the spotlight for much of last season. With Jim Harbaugh missing half of the 2023 season due to various scandals and indiscretions, Moore had a dry run as the head man for the maize and blue but hasn’t been able to keep the train moving the way he or the Michigan faithful would’ve liked. The Michigan Wolverines come into this one ranked, but a game on the road against Illinois serves as a measuring stick for Moore as a program leader and as a premier college head coach. Both coach’s performances on Saturday will send waves back to fanbases and athletic departments, for better or worse.

Superstar Setting

As the college football season continues, big-time players will assume a bigger role in how teams perform. More tape is available and more chaos ensues. Michigan touts more superstar-level talent and has the anticipated potential to rise to this occasion to defeat Illinois on the road. On defense, they have two of the best down-linemen in the country with Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham, along with an expected Top 5 pick in this spring’s NFL Draft in the form of Will Johnson. They also will run out a pair of running backs that can break games open with Donovan Edwards and Kalel Mullings.

Illinois has had some players pop up and be great performers at different points throughout the season but sparsely have they matched the talent that Michigan’s top players put out on the field. Xavier Scott missed last week’s game and is going to have to prove that he is 100%. Pat Bryant has consistently been a threat at receiver but hasn’t been the top target for Luke Altmyer. Altmyer himself has shown gaps in his pocket awareness resulting in fumbles. The defensive front led by TeRah Edwards and Dennis Briggs Jr. have had entire quarters where they were invisible.

The Illinois Fighting Illini may have a more balanced overall team across the board, but Michigan is better where it counts and they have the best individuals on the field at any given time. Players for the Illini have a great stage to come out and show that they are big-time stars playing big-time football, but players for the Michigan Wolverines have already done that and have an experience advantage in big games that could ultimately decide this game if it comes down to one or two huge plays.
