With the Paris Games coming to an end, many athletes and fans alike are already looking ahead to the next Olympics, the Los Angeles Games. Set for 2028, the Games already have fans wondering: what will a Los Angeles-based Olympics look like? What sports will be included in the 2028 Games?
While much is still unknown about the next Games, one thing is for certain: the 2028 Games will take place in Los Angeles, California. With the arrival of the ceremonial Olympic flag in Los Angeles on Monday, August 12, France officially passed the torch to the United States as the next Olympic host. For more about the upcoming Games, including the new sporting additions to the competition, continue reading below.
Who is Hosting the Next Olympic Games?
In 2028, Los Angeles will host the Olympic Games for the first time since 1984. Prior to that, the Games hadn’t taken place in Los Angeles since 1932. Additionally, according to the LA Olympics website, five new sports will be included in the Los Angeles Games in 2028: baseball/softball, lacrosse, cricket, flag football, and squash. The former three, baseball/softball, lacrosse, and cricket, are all returning sports, while the latter two, flag football and squash, will be making their Olympic debut.
Furthermore, venues for the next Games will include stadiums and arenas around Los Angeles, in locations such as Long Beach, Inglewood, Carson, Temecula, and Downtown LA. According to various reports, LA’s own SoFi Stadium will host the swimming and track and field events, while the new Crypto.com Arena will be the host for the gymnastics events. SoFi Stadium will also be the location of the Games opening ceremony.
In order to prepare the stadium for both events, the order of the track and field and swimming competitions will be swapped in the Los Angeles Games. The track and field events will go first, followed by the swim events. While it is typically the other way around, the next Olympics will switch the order of events to accommodate the stadium’s shortcomings and prepare the pool for the Olympians to swim.

Per NBC Los Angeles, the opening ceremony for the Los Angeles Games will take place on July 14, 2028, and the Games will run through July 30, 2028. When speaking about Los Angeles hosting the next Games, Chairperson Casey Wasserman stated, “LA is an ambitious city of endless possibilities, and the Games will reflect our community. Los Angeles will provide the perfect backdrop to host the world’s biggest cultural, sporting, and entertainment event.” It will be interesting to see how the Games bring new energy to the City of Angels in 2028.
Who Will Compete in the Los Angeles Games?
Several athletes who made their Olympic debuts in Paris will likely compete again in 2028. According to Sports Illustrated, some of these athletes include (it is interesting to note each speculated returning athlete is in their late teens to early twenties):
- U.S. swimmers Torri Huske, Carson Foster, Jack Alexy, Alex Shackell, Aaron Shackell, and Phoebe Bacon
- U.S. women’s soccer players Trinity Rodman and Sophia Smith
- U.S. track and field athletes Quincy Wilson and Sha’Carri Richardson
- U.S. gymnasts Jade Carey, Suni Lee, Hezley Rivera, and Jordan Chiles
- U.S. women’s archer Casey Kaufhold – In the Paris Games, Kaufhold won the United States first Olympic medal in archery since 1988
Much speculation is still surrounding the return of popular athletes like Katie Ledecky and Simone Biles. While both are older than typical Olympic athletes, if the athletes’ performances in Paris were any indication, these stars are still at the top of their games. It will be interesting to see if they will return next Olympic season. At that time, both will be in their early 30s and although not unheard of, most Olympians peak competition-wise during their mid-to-late twenties. Hence, most of the speculated returning athletes all being aged in their late teens to early twenties.
Surely, in the next four years, we will hear more about the upcoming Games as they draw nearer. Assumedly, a lot will become clear regarding athletes participating in the Games as the trials and qualifying events take place before the 2028 Games.
