If your NFL team needs help on defense, the 2025 NFL Draft should have the answer. I am trying to remember a draft with this much elite talent on the defensive side. But don’t fret if your team desperately needs an offensive weapon. After watching college football this weekend, I couldn’t help but notice a wide receiver from the University of Arizona who completely took over the game.
A lot of you probably went to bed after watching Notre Dame vs Texas A&M. It was hyped as the game of the week, but let’s just say it did not deliver. I decided to turn to the New Mexico/Arizona game. There is hype surrounding the 21st-ranked Wildcat team, and they are expected to have more players drafted than usual. And let me tell you, after watching WR Tetairoa McMillan, I was not disappointed.
Generational Talent
Every once in a while, the draft gives you what’s called a generational talent. An example would be WR Calvin Johnson who was drafted 2nd overall in the 2007 draft out of Georgia Tech. Nicknamed Megatron, Johnson had everything you could want in a WR. His attributes included long arms, body control, soft hands, leaping ability, and toughness. And let’s just be honest. He was just bigger and stronger than anyone who tried to defend him. Johnson was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021.
Flash forward 17 years, and we may have another generational talent at wide receiver. I am not saying Tetairoa McMillan is the next Calvin Johnson. He has a long way to go to live up to that hype. As I watch McMillan play, I can’t help but think I haven’t seen a wide receiver do these things since Johnson at Georgia Tech.
Nightmare for Defenses
New Mexico had no answer for the 6-foot-5 212-pound junior wideout. McMillian produced video game numbers: 10 catches for 304 years and 4 TDs. The Hawaii native blistered the Lobos with his speed and precise route running. Arizona was down 7 points late in the 2nd quarter and faced a 3rd and 10 from their own 22. Wildcat QB Noah Fifita hit McMillan near the sideline 20 yards downfield. McMillan preceded to run by the Lobo defenders for a 78-yard touchdown. It changed the entire momentum of the game and Arizona would go on to win 61-39.
McMillan has natural hands and catches the ball away from his body. He looks comfortable in space with most of his yards coming after the catch. On one of the TDs, the corner did fall down. But it was McMillian’s quick feet in the route that caused the CB to tumble. McMillan would score a 69-yard TD on the play.
Final Thoughts
I would not be surprised if McMillan is the star of the NFL combine come March in Indianapolis. He could easily have a workout similar to Calvin Johnson’s. As the season progresses, I want to see how McMillan fares against stronger opponents. He is a matchup nightmare for opposing defensive coordinators with his combination of size and speed. McMillan is not just a candidate to be the first receiver taken but a candidate to go 1st overall in the 2025 draft. Arizona’s next game is Saturday against Northern Arizona.
