2025 NFL Draft: Fits for Quarterback Needy Teams

Denver Broncos
At this point in September, it’s up for grabs who will be the first quarterback selected in the 2025 draft. It won’t be like the 2024 draft when 6 of the first 12 picks were QBs. But every year there are quarterback-needy teams that need to upgrade the position.

The Carolina Panthers traded up to draft Bryce Young #1 overall in the 2023 draft. Let’s just say it has not worked out at all. In the off-season, the Panthers upgraded their offensive line and hired Dave Canales as their head coach. Canales has a proven track record of getting the most out of quarterbacks. Both Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield have had their best seasons under Canales. But Young struggled mightily in his rookie season. He was worse this year and has recently been benched.
The Panthers need more than just a QB. Their roster needs upgrades at many positions.  Why not trade down, get more picks, and reload the roster? A prospect that would fit well after a trade down is Quinn Ewers from Texas. He has made many big plays in big games for the Longhorns. He needs to improve his footwork and mechanics. Canales is the type of coach that can get the most out of Ewers. Ewers is #15 on the consensus draft big board.

Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans have invested a lot of draft capital in the offensive and defensive line. But quarterback continues to be a major need. They selected Will Levis in the 2nd round of the 2023 draft out of Kentucky. Levis has the arm talent but turns the ball over way too often. The Titans will likely look to select another QB in the 2025 draft.
Carson Beck out of Georgia would be an ideal fit. Beck is the classic pocket passer who gets rid of the ball on time. If you give him a clean pocket, he will make the defense pay. New head coach Brian Callahan was the offensive coordinator of the Joe Burrough led Bengals. While Beck is not the draft prospect Burrough was, I do see similar styles in their game. Beck is #4 on the draft consensus board.

New York Giants

The New York Giants gave quarterback Daniel Jones a 4-year 160-million-dollar contract after a successful 2022 season. It has been a disaster ever since. Jones has struggled to stay healthy and when healthy, he has not been effective. Former Bills offensive coordinator and current head coach Brian Daboll clearly likes mobile quarterbacks. Both the Bill’s Josh Allen and Jones fit that mold. There is another QB that is even more mobile than either of them.
Shedeur Sanders from Colorado is a playmaker. The son of Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders, Shedeur can throw from the pocket and on the run. He is a tremendous athlete who projects to do a lot of damage with his legs at the next level. While he made one really bad throw against Nebraska that led to a pick-six, he is putting together another outstanding season. Sanders is #5 on the consensus big board.

Final Thoughts

There are three other possibilities for the top QB taken in the 2025 draft. Miami’s Cam Ward has a lot of the tools you look for in a modern QB. I wrote about him here. Ward is currently #27 on the consensus board. Penn St’s Drew Aller is a massive QB with a big-time arm and the quick-release draft evaluators love. Aller is #49 on the consensus board. Alabama’s Jalen Milroe is a terrific athlete who has a lot of clutch throws in his career. You can read more about him here. Milroe is currently #51 on the consensus draft big board.
