2025 NFL Draft Prospects to Keep an Eye On: Texas Vs. Michigan Part One: Longhorns

Draft
If you want to watch a college game with NFL draft talent, this is the game for you. Rarely do we get to witness two top 10 teams play in a non-conference matchup. Both Michigan and Texas play in the two best conferences in college football. Michigan is in the Big Ten and Texas is now in the SEC. As a result of the 12-game playoff, we should get more of these matchups. Teams can play harder non-conference schedules because they can afford to lose two or even three games and still make the top 12. Let’s hope this trend continues.
Texas is currently ranked 3rd in the AP Top 25 behind only Georgia and Ohio St. The Longhorns are among the favorites this season after losing in the first round of the playoff to Washington last year. Despite having a program record 11 players drafted, Texas still has several prospects scouts are watching. They are especially loaded on the offensive side of the ball.

Experienced Quarterback

Quinn Ewers has started 23 games in three seasons at Texas. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound redshirt junior threw for 3 TDs for 260 yards in a 52-0 stomping of Colorado St. last week. Ewers will face the defending National Champions, who are coming off a victory against Fresno St. 30-10. With a big game against a strong Michigan defense, Ewers could find himself a candidate to be the first QB taken in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Ewers may have the quickest release in the country. It allows him to use different arm angles to make throws all over the field aided by his above-average arm. He will not hesitate to fit the ball into tight windows to make a play. Quarterback-needy teams want to see how he plays against the best programs in the country. Ewers was up to the challenge last season leading a 2nd half comeback against Alabama in Tuscaloosa. While he could improve his footwork and mechanics, those traits are fixable and shouldn’t hinder his draft status.

Explosive Wide Receiver

Texas lost their top two receivers to the NFL draft this past season. Xavier Worthy went 28th to the Kansas City Chiefs while Adonai Mitchell went 52nd to the Colts. The good news is 5-foot-11 180-pound Isaiah Bond transferred from Alabama to Texas following Nick Saban’s retirement. He caught 5 catches for 61 yards and a touchdown against the Rams last week.
Bond is small for your typical NFL wide receiver, but his quickness and explosiveness are evident. He is elusive and runs crisp routes that allow him to separate from defensive backs. His field awareness is top-notch and he excels at tracking the ball in the air. Bond also is extremely dangerous after the catch. NFL teams will want to find a way to get the ball in his hands as much as possible.
The player Bond reminds me of is Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed. Reed was a 2nd round pick (50th overall) in the 2023 draft, but I expect Bond to go higher than that. Reed had an outstanding rookie season and was Jordan Love’s top target. Like Reed, Bond projects as a starting slot receiver in the NFL. Bond is consensus #31 in the 2025 draft.

Texas also has offensive lineman Kelvin Banks Jr, who could be the first tackle off the board in the 2025 draft. He is regarded as one of the best pass-blocking left tackles in the country. He is currently consensus No. 14 pick, but I expect him to go in the top 10 come April. Texas could easily have three first-round picks from the offensive side of the ball in next year’s draft. They play Michigan at Noon Eastern this Saturday on FOX.
