It’s time to start talking about Cam Ward as a legit contender to be the 1st quarterback off the board in the 2025 draft. The 6-foot-2 235-pound Miami senior and Washington St. transfer is set on making the 12-team College Football Playoff. Miami is currently 19th in the AP poll but likely to move up after this performance. Ward could even get into the Heisman discussion if he continues to produce at an elite level. He is currently 59th on the consensus draft big board.
One thing Ward will need to improve is his decision-making. His lone interception came early in the game when Miami was ahead 7-0. The right-hander was running to his left and tried to throw back against his body. The throw was inaccurate and easily intercepted by Florida linebacker Shemar James. Ward was under pressure and should have thrown the ball away. Florida was able to add a field goal and cut the lead to 7-3.
Ward would bounce back and have his way with the Florida defense. His stat line read 26-35 for 385 yards and 3 TDs. He would add 33 yards on the ground including a long of 24. When a play breaks down, Ward can extend it and scramble if no one is open. The ability to go “off-script” is an attribute NFL teams look for when drafting a quarterback. Ward typically gets rid of the ball on time and will throw his receivers open.
With his quick release, Ward can fit the ball in tight windows. He uses a variety of throwing angles depending on the play. This allows him to get rid of the ball immediately after the snap on bubble routes, slants, and hitches. Ward has a strong arm and should be able to make every throw at the next level.
One of Ward’s favorite weapons and another potential high draft pick is Senior WR Xavier Restrepo. He finished with 7 catches for 116 yards and a touchdown. Restrepo hauled in a few contested catches and made plays all over the field. He added 38 yards after the catch and is currently 120 on the
consensus draft big board. After this game, I expect Restrepo to move into the top 100.
Florida is not the program they once were when they won back-to-back National Championships in 2006-2007. But going into the Swamp is no easy task for an opposing quarterback. Ward was unfazed by the challenge and led his team to a 41-17 beatdown of the Gators. With more performances like this, Ward could hear his name called early in the 2025 NFL Draft. Miami’s next game is Saturday against Florida A&M.
