Joe Cordina a Tough Challenge for Shakur Stevenson

Joe Cordina

Promoter Eddie Hearn expects Joe Cordina can put Shakur Stevenson in trouble on the 12th of October lightweight fight in the Kingdom Arena, Riyadh Saudi Arabia in the undercard match against Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol fight.

For Hearn, such a fight is to bring about the revival of Shakur Stevenson after two previous fights against Edwin De Los Santos and Artem Harutyunyan. Thus, by fighting with Cordina, Hearn plans to make Shakur an outstanding fighter and create curiosity for the unification battle against Gervonta Davis in 2025.

Joe Cordina’s Questionable Status

Hardly anyone would give Joe Cordina the high recommendation that Hearn is giving him here. This means that he had the IBF title but was seen as a paper champion and he should have lost to Shavkat Rakhimov who fought him in April this year in Cardiff, Wales. Eddi Hearn still believes that he was the best at 130 pounds before this division jumped the division and lost to Anthony Cacace. But critics say that if Joe Cordina was as good as Hearn painted him to be, he should have demanded a rematch with Cacace to right the fiasco of a KO loss.

Hearn still emphasizes Joe Cordina’s achievements. He usually mention that his knockout of Kenichi Ogawa in 2022 coupled with a tough victory over Rakhimov to get a second world title. In this write-up, Hearn has acknowledged that Joe Cordina lost to Cacace, it was not by getting hit after the bell but was always an outperformed fighter.

Hearn wants people to understand that no one could confidently state that Shakur’s previous opponent would defeat him. He mentions that likes of Oscar Valdez, Jamel Herring and Jeremiah Nakathilia thinking they would be hard-pressed to get the better of Joe Cordina. Hearn believes the fight against Stevenson is the type of challenge that motivates Cordina, and he’s confident Cordina can pull off a big upset.

Another factor why this fight could be tough is that the opponent, Shakur Stevenson doesn’t have a typical fighting style. He’s a defensive player who rarely attacks and almost always avoids his opponents. This has made him less fun to view in the ring but has also protected him and made him much more secure within a ring. The only way he might have a better chance is by hitting Shakur hard, but this also means risking a counterpunch. This won’t be easy because of how Shakur fights.

In Conclusion

One in the eyes of promoter Eddie Hearn, who thinks that the Shakur Stevenson- Joe Cordina fight is a very dangerous one for both athletes. That is why it is impossible to say that he is an unnecessary opponent for Shakur, although he may be the favorite, Cordina is determined and skillful. That a man as cautious as Shakur may suffer or that Cordina finally brings out the best as an attacker remains to be seen but this fight is going to be very intersting
