Washington Wizards Sign Hawks Free Agent to 3-Year Deal

Atlanta Hawks drafting Donovan Clingan? Hawks Free Agent 2024 NBA offseason

This 2024 NBA offseason has been an exciting one. More news dropped tonight as Hawks Free Agent Saddiq Bey will be packing his bags and leaving Atlanta. Now, the forward will make the move to the Washington Wizards. It’s clear that the Wizards are trying to build a core team as they struggled in the 2023-24 season. Big changes will most likely continue as they try to find their footing. Bey is a soild addition that will hopefully provide some help to the young roster.

Bey didn’t spend much time with the Atlanta Hawks, as he was picked up at the midpoint of the 2022-23 season from the Detroit Pistons. He didn’t make a giant impact on the team, but there was the chance his second season would be better. However, this didn’t happen. Bey would go on to average 13.7 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists before he tore his ACL and wouldn’t take the court again.

Furthermore, it is believed that the 2024 NBA offseason won’t be enough for Bey to recover. The latest news is that he will be set to return sometime during the 2024-25 season. Perhaps the Wizards believe that he’ll make a big impact for them when he finally returns. Honestly, the Wizards can’t get much worse after last season.

How Bey Will Fit With the Wizards

The Hawks free agent could have a key role to play when he makes his return. Washington’s solid small forward Deni Avdija made a shift to the Portland Trail Blazers this season, leaving the position open for grabs. Corey Kispert and Marvin Bagley III are the forwards that fall behind star player Kyle Kuzma. However, neither of them had an amazing year.

There is a good chance Bey will be rotating with these two players unless more trades happen. He could be the better option, but only time will tell. It will heavily depend on how he recovers from his ACL injury and how Kispert and Bagley are doing when Bey comes back.

One thing that the forward will add to this team is his rebounding. Bey isn’t the best rebounder in the league, but he’s a decent one. The Wizards were the bottom team in rebounding, and it’s clear they’re looking to change this with the moves they make during the 2024 NBA offseason.

Let’s not forget that the Wizards added Alex Sarr to the lineup after the 2024 NBA Draft. The French forward is 7’1″ and could really help this team improve. He’s going to be a giant boost in the rebounding department. They also added veteran Malcolm Brogdon, who should be considered a fantastic grab for this team. Brogdon can bring veteran leadership to the locker room that is heavily needed for this team.

Another player picked up this 2024 NBA Offseason is veteran center Jonas Valanciunas. All of these moves show that the Wizards are looking to make a big improvement. Last season, they were constantly being beaten by every team, including the Detroit Pistons who were also awful last season.

Saddiq Bey is one piece of the puzzle that could pull Washington out of the hole it constantly falls into. It may take time for this new lineup to get settled, but if they can, we might see a Wizards roster that is actually competitive. It will be interesting to see how they end up playing as a unit when the season starts.
