New York Yankees Gerrit Cole “Feeling Good” After 70-Pitch Rehab Start

New York Yankees Gerrit Cole is one of the many players dealing with elbow injuries

The New York Yankees are having a spectacular season, and reinforcements may be coming soon. Reigning AL Cy Young award winner Gerrit Cole has yet to pitch this season due to an elbow injury. While this was a huge concern for the team going into the season, the offense has been good enough to carry the Yankees to the best record in baseball. Cole pitched a rehab game in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday. He commented he was “feeling good” after the game.

The New York Yankees don’t want to rush Gerrit Cole back but also know he would be a huge boost to their already dominant team. On Friday, Cole had 70 pitches in a start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. This was his third rehab start, and so far, there have not been any setbacks. In 4.1 innings, he allowed just two hits and struck out ten batters. Cole spoke to reporters after the game and had this to say.

“I’m obviously feeling good today. Last night was a good night.”

“It feels like it’s coming together. Regardless, I don’t anticipate coming back with a 100 pitches, so there’s a ways to go. The closer and closer you get, the more excited you get.”

Even though he has strung together three good starts, there isn’t a timetable for his return. Gerrit Cole is anxious to get back into the rotation for the New York Yankees but knows that every piece of information has to be taken into account.

“I want to look at the computer, too, it usually takes a day to process all the numbers and stuff, so I think probably a conversation will happen when we get that information,” he told reporters when asked if he thought his next start would be in the big leagues. “My eyes said it was pretty good. I’m assuming it was really good.”

The Yankees Can Be Patient

When Gerrit Cole went down with an injury before the season, many saw the New York Yankees rotation as a weak point. It has been anything but. They lead the American League with a team 2.88 ERA. While the offense has been elite behind the bat of Aaron Judge, the pitching has also been dominant. Still, things can change fast in this league. Clarke Schmidt just went on the 15-day IL, and the game of baseball can change quickly.

Ultimately, any team wants their ace back in the rotation. Whether the team is in first place or last place, getting the best pitcher on your team back is a good thing. The American League has to watch out for the New York Yankees. If they are already having this good of a season, they might be on the fast track to the long-awaited World Series title.
