Dodgers Acquire Cavan Biggio in Deal with Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays sent down Cavan Biggio on Friday.

The Los Angeles Dodgers saw potential in a player that the Blue Jays have discounted this season. After being with the Blue Jays for the entirety of his career, veteran Cavan Biggio has officially said goodbye to Toronto and is headed to Hollywood. Biggio was sent to the Dodgers in a deal between Los Angeles and Toronto on Wednesday.

The addition of this super utility star to the Dodgers’ lineup may prove to be a lucrative move for Los Angeles as some of their long-time stars have been struggling at the plate. It is hoped that his presence in the infield and at the plate will be enough to set the Dodgers even higher than the rest.

Will Biggio make a big impact on the Dodgers?

The Blue Jays designated Biggio for assignment last week before the Dodgers acquired him early on Wednesday. The trade involved The Dodgers receiving Biggio along with cash considerations in exchange for Minor Leaguer, Braydon Fisher.

Fisher is a right-handed pitcher who was drafted in 2018 by the Dodgers. The Blue Jays are hopeful for the role he will play as he develops in their system.

To make room on the roster for Biggio, Los Angeles has optioned Miguel Vargas to Triple-A Oklahoma City. With the open space, Biggio will be spending time in the infield and specifically at third base.

The Dodgers hope that Biggio will bring the necessary consistency needed to carry the weight of the struggling veterans this season. The main source of issues comes from Chris Taylor. Taylor, who has been very consistent for his 10-year career, has struggled tremendously this season. He is batting .100 this season with only nine hits in 90 at-bats.

Throughout his career in the big leagues, he has remained consistent in his numbers. He has a career batting average of .227 and a career OPS of .725. This season is off to a slow start for Biggio as he is batting just .200 on the year, but the Dodgers are hopeful the change of scenery is all he needs to heat up in his new environment.

Biggio, a native of Houston Texas, grew up with a strong baseball background. His father is Hall of Famer and Houston Astros Legend, Craig Biggio. He played baseball at the University of Notre Dame where he was drafted in 2013 by the Philadelphia Phillies

He has played for Toronto since his Major League debut in 2019. After five years of playing on the big stage, he has proven to be a strong competitor and an asset to his team. Though he hasn’t had what many consider to be jaw-dropping seasons, his consistency is what many teams desire due to his dependability to produce.

The Dodgers are now 42-26 on the year with a winning percentage of .618. Their closest competitor, the San Diego Padres, is seven games back from them. The reliability of Biggio may be the key piece the Dodgers are looking for to propel them through the remainder of the season.

Biggio will make his Dodger debut at home against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, June 12. He will be batting ninth and playing third base.
