Libema Open: Top Seeds Triumph In 2nd Round Clashes

The 2024 edition of the Libema Open continued after the Adrian Mannarino clash with Gijs Brouwer. The third, fourth, and sixth seeds clashed with unseeded opponents.

In the center court, Defending champion Tallon Griekspoor was paired with 29-year-old American Mackenzie McDonald. The 2024 Dubai Tennis Championships champion, Ugo Humbert, clashed with fellow Frenchman Arthur Fils in a second-round clash on Court 1.

Also in Court 1, the 28-year-old 2023 Australian Open semifinalist, Karen Khachanov, was paired with ATP ranked No. eight Aleksandar Vukic in the Libema Open second round.

Griekspoor Starts Libema Open With Win

Tallon Griekspoor

World No. 23 Libema Open defending champion and the 2024 edition’s 6th seed, Tallon Griekspoor, started his title defence with a straight sets win over Mackenzie McDonald.

The Dutchman dominated the Americans all through their Libema Open match. He won 80% of both his first and second serve points in the first set, securing six points from aces alone. Griekspoor didn’t face a single breakpoint in the entire first set.

In the second set, both players traded breakpoints, but Griekspoor dominated at the net with 14 points to America’s three. Griekspoor’s unforced errors dragged the set to a tiebreak, and he won to qualify for the Libema Open quarterfinal.

Humbert Wins All-French Clash

Ugo Humbert

Ugo Humbert’s clash with Arthur Fils mirrored Griekspoor Libema Open second round clash. The 3rd seed dominated the younger Frenchman in the first set, firing four aces past Fils without a single double fault.

The first set of the Libema Open clash had Humbert dominating Fils in the first serve, scoring 17 of 19 points and three of the four on his second serve. He also won four of the eight points contested for on Fils’ second serve. Humbert didn’t face a single break point throughout the first set.

Humbert scored five more points from aces in the second set, although two double faults offset the total. The 3rd seed dominated Arthur Fils in his first and second serves, including Arthur Fils’, winning the set in a tiebreak. Humbert will face Gijs Brouwer in the Libema Open quarterfinal.

Khachanov’s Match Suspended

Karen Khachanov Libema Open

Karen Khachanov clashed with Aleksandar Vukic in the pair’s Libema Open second round clash. Aleksandar Vukic dominated the first set but lost the second to the Russian. The Libema Open clash’s third set was eventually suspended due to darkness.

In the first set, Vukic won 17 first serve points including six aces, winning five of his second serve points. He dominated Khachanov with winners, scoring 13 to the Russian’s four.

The second set was more evenly matched, but the Russian edged the Australian at the net. He also smashed 13 winners past the Australian, six more than the Australian’s seven. Khachanov broke Vukic’s serve twice, one more than the Australian managed, and took the set 7-5.

Note:

Ugo Humbert has won two titles in 2024. The first came in February against Grigor Dimitrov in the Open 13 final, while the second came in March against Alexander Bublik in the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Tallon Griekspoor is the defending champion of the Libema Open. He defeated current world No. 9, Alex De Minaur, in the quarterfinal. He’d face the winner of the Khachanov Vs Vukic match in this year’s quarterfinal.
