The Timberwolves center, Naz Reid, won this season’s 6th Man of the Year award. He played 81 games this season and averaged 13.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and almost 1 steal and block per game. Naz slightly improved his scoring numbers, as he scored 11.5 points the year prior.

In most cases, a team’s 6th man is a veteran who was once a starter and decided to play a lesser role for their team to have a better chance at winning. In an even rarer case, a player could be like Manu Ginobili. He decided to stay on the bench his whole career so the Spurs could maintain their key players and continue to grow their play system. That resulted in the Manu being a four-time champion.

However, Naz Reid is 24 years old. He’s still young in his career compared to past 6th Man of the Year winners. Not only is he the first Minnesota Timberwolves player to receive this honor, but he is also one of only six NBA players to receive the award under 25 years old.

The other five players are Ben Gordon (21), Tyler Herro (22), James Harden (22), Roy Tarpley (23), and Leonardo Barbosa (24).

Minnesota Timberwolves Center Speaks On His Win

Naz Reid‘s basketball journey from being an undrafted LSU player to being on the Minnesota Timberwolves to now being one of the youngest 6th Man of the Year winners is something special. He spoke to the NBA on TNT crew about his newest accomplishment.

The Minnesota Timberwolves center told Ernie and his crew, “It’s one of a kind, something that you obviously dreamed of, especially at the highest level. They’ve seen me work since day one… I think just being with me, that’s super special… blessed to be in this situation, it’s special.”
