Team USA and Serbia will face each other in the 2024 Paris Olympics men’s basketball semifinals. In these teams’ two games, the US team came out on top in both games. However, the Serbian team shouldn’t be underestimated due to their last performance in the quarterfinals. Thus, what should we expect in this game?
Team USA At The 2024 Paris Olympics
So far, the US team’s performance has improved. A notable improvement for this team was from Joel Embiid. Embiid struggled a bit in the preliminary round games, however coming into the quarterfinals, Joel Embiid improved his performance. In Team USA’s last game against Puerto Rico, the Philadelphia 76ers center broke out to have 15 points, three rebounds, two blocks, and two assists. In the field, he made 6-of-14 shots and one three-pointer.
Finally, in his quarterfinal performance against Brazil, Embiid displayed a clinical performance by scoring 14 points, shooting 5-of-6 from the field and going 3-of-3 from deep with seven rebounds. Embiid will look to continue his strong play against Team Serbia.
Players to watch out for in Team USA’s next game are Kevin Durant and Anthony Edwards. Kevin Durant just became the all-time scorer for Team USA and he will look to extend his record. Anthony Edwards has been on fire since after leading the team in performance against Puerto Rico. Edwards scored 26 points, shooting 11-for-15 from the field and 3-of-6 6 in 17 minutes off the bench.
Review on Team Serbia
Unlike the US team, the Serbians had a bumpy ride from the group stage to the quarterfinals. Currently, the Serbian team is 3-1 in their last four games. In the quarterfinals against Australia, the Serbians fought their way through after coming back from a 24-point deficit to win in overtime. Therefore, the Serbians have the grit to keep up with the USA’s offense in the Olympic semifinals.
Nikola Jokic was the top performer for Team Serbia. The former MVP got a double-double of 21 points and 14 rebounds with eight assists. From the field, he made 9-of-17 shot attempts and 3-of-4 attempts from the free throw line. Jokic struggled to make his three-pointers during his last game which could be a major setback for his team’s overall performance. Bojan Bogdanovic was also on fire to keep the team’s spirit alive. He finished with 17 points, six assists, and five rebounds going 6-for-17 from the field and 3-for-8 from deep.
Final Thoughts
Stephen Curry hasn’t been in his bag since the Paris Olympics started. The only time the Golden State Warrior guard scored double digits in a game was in the debut Olympic game against Serbia in the group stage. On the other hand, this could be Steve Kerr’s tactics to distract the opposing team from focusing on Curry while other players outperform. Thus, Curry is on track to break out in this semifinal game against Serbia.
The Serbian team played Team USA in the pre-Olympic exhibition and group stage. Therefore, the Serbians could make the game more competitive with these previous experiences. Team USA plays good 3-and-D on the court as 48.4% of their field goals were three-pointers. On the other hand, the Serbian team struggled with making triples in their last game which could affect their overall performance in the game.
