Team USA acquired ten more medals during Sunday’s competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The newest additions push the ribbon haul to a whopping 28 medals on the weekend for the United States of America over the last two days.  Unlike Saturday, the majority of medals were gold for Team USA on the typical American rest day.

At the midway point of the game, the swimming and golf competitions wrapped up yesterday with the Americans having plenty of golden opportunities. Meanwhile, the track and field portion of the 2024 Paris Olympics began its featured presentation with various qualifiers and only a handful of medal chances in the early days of the track meets. Here is what you need to know from a very busy Sunday on day nine from Paris, France.

Lilly King entered the final day of swimming competitions at her third Olympic Games still looking for her first medal.  King’s teammates in the 4-by-100-meter relay earned shiny new ribbons at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Sunday represented King’s last opportunity to claim a medal in three straight Olympics.

Regan Smith, Torri Huske, and Gretchen Walsh were the correct teammates in the race as Team USA set a new world record of 3:49:62. Team USA downed Australia by three seconds. The People’s Republic of China placed third in the event in Nanterre, France.  Team USA swimmer Bobby Finke also set a world record for the United States in the 1500-meter freestyle final with a swim time of 14:30:67. Finke’s new record eclipses a world record set at the 2012 London Olympics. The 24-year-old swimmer said he realized he had a chance for history while in the pool:

“I could see I was half a body length to a body length in front of [the record] at times,” Finke said after the race. “I knew I was on that pace. That wasn’t really my focus, but I did hit the world record, so I’m really proud of that.”

Lyles Flies in 100m Final at 2024 Paris Olympics

Noah Lyles can claim the title of “fastest man in the world” after a photo-finish win in the 100-meter final on Sunday night. It had been 20 years since an American male runner had claimed victory in the race. Lyles slipped past Jamaican runner Kishane Thompson as the athletes collectively crossed the finish line shortly after the 9.7-second mark. Lyles told NBC Sports that he was even stunned a bit by the result:

“Ima be honest, I was shocked,” Lyles told NBC Sports. “I thought I got out-leaned, truly. Me and Kishane were right next to each and I was like, “I’ma have to swallow my pride on this one”

Scheffler completes comeback on Olympics Stage

The final round of golf was contested on Sunday with the World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler looking to complete a charge up the leaderboards for a medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Scheffler made up four shots over 18 holes to shoot a nine-under 62 to claim the gold medal for Team USA. Tommy Fleetwood of England and Hideki Matsuyama of Japan finished second and third, respectively.  Scheffler’s post-tournament comments echo many American athletes this week who have claimed ribbons at the Summer Games:

“It’s been a long week. It’s been a challenging week. I played some great golf today, and I’m proud to be going home with a medal,” Scheffler said. “These guys played tremendous golf and I think we should all be proud of the golf that we played this week.”

Team USA Pulling Away In Total Medal Count

The United States holds an insurmountable lead in the total medal count at the 2024 Paris Olympics following a dominating effort over the August 3-4 weekend. Overall the US captured 28 medals to surge to an incredible total of 71 medals collected.  The People’s Republic of China (45) moves ahead of France (44).

Team USA’s five gold medals on Sunday helped to close the gap that the People’s Republic of China opened up in the race for most top-tier medals of the Summer Games. Both nations are now tied at the top of the leaderboard with 19 gold medals received, with France looking up the standings with 12 wins on home soil.
