2024 Paris Olympics: Ledecky, Biles Chase History on Day Eight

Simone Biles Wins Gold at the Paris Olympics, 2024 Paris Olympics, Team USA

The 2024 Paris Olympics continued into Day 8 with plenty of excitement and intrigue. American swimmer Katie Ledecky completed her final event at the Summer Games, while Team USA gymnast Simone Biles looked to capture another top spot in Paris.

As swimming wraps up, the track and field events get underway in France. Shi’Carri Richardson received her first chance in a track final with surprising results. Let’s take a look at what you need to know for the 2024 Paris Olympics on the eighth day in France.

Another Memorable August 3rd For Katie Ledecky

August 3 is the anniversary of Katie Ledecky’s very first gold medal in 2012 during the London Olympics. Twelve years later, she finished her 9th Olympic finals race in the first place position to claim golden glory in the 800m Women’s Free Final. The victory was the second gold medal of the 2024 Paris Olympics, and the ninth overall in her career.

Only Michael Phelps sits ahead of her all-time in American Olympic history with 23 golden ribbons. Lededecky sets a brand new mark for American women to strive for during the Summer Games. Mark Spitz and Carl Lewis are the only other American athletes to reach nine gold medals in their Olympic careers. A Finnish runner and Soviet gymnast are the only other international athletes to accomplish the milestone.

Simone Biles Vaults To Another Gold at 2024 Paris Olympics

Simone Biles took the GOAT chain off, took a deep breath, and crushed the Vault competition with two amazing vaults to secure victory in her best event in women’s gymnastics. The gold medal is the seventh gold of her career. Biles has an opportunity to win two more golds during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. If she does, Simone will tie Ledecky with 9 all-time gold ribbons by the close of the 2024 Paris Olympic gymnastics competitions.

Just like the All-around medal stand, Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade stood in second place with an American leotard on the opposite side of the podium.  Jade Carey won the bronze medal to complete the medal selfies.

Team USA male gymnast Stephen Nedoroscik claimed his second award at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a bronze in individual pommel horse on Saturday afternoon.

Shi’Carri Richardson Settles For Silver

It was a long wait for Shi’Carri Richardson to return to the Olympic stage after being disqualified from running in the 2020 Summer Games. Richardson saw a runner from a small Caribbean country 2,667 miles away surge across the line first leaving Richardson in second place. Melissa Jefferson, a training partner of Shi’Carri, secured bronze for Team USA.

Julien Alfred from Saint Lucia won the Caribbean island’s first-ever medal with the finish in pole position. “It means a lot to me. It means a lot to my coach. It means a lot to my country,” Alfred said. “I’m sure they’re celebrating right now.”

Team USA Medal Count Tops 60 Overall

It was a fine day to have a USA uniform on during competition during the Summer Games. The United States of America won 18 medals on Saturday to surge to a 20-medal advantage over any other nation at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Team USA finished the day with 61 total ribbons. Similar to yesterday, France (41) and China (37) sit in second and third place, respectively.

In the quest for the best medals, Team USA made up significant ground with three gold medals to finish the day at 14. China still leads with 16 golds. France and Australia are tied for third with 12.
