Team USA entered Day Four at the 2024 Paris Olympics, looking to secure more medals in several categories. The swimming competitions saw the U.S.A. take home several ribbons. Team USA Women’s Gymnastics stole the spotlight with an epic performance as they dominated the field. Meanwhile, a far-less funded Team USA Women’s Rugby squad scored late to acquire their first-ever medal for Team USA Rugby at the Summer Olympics games.

Team USA Women’s Gymnastics Captures Gold
Simone Biles’ wide-eyed, beaming grin at the end of her floor routine at Bercy Arena said everything that needed to be said for the redemption arc for Team USA Women’s Gymnastics at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Needing only a score of 8 points to claim the gold, Biles stepped onto the mat and delivered as she always has done, with a final score of 14.666.
Biles, along with teammates Sunisa Lee, Jordan Chiles, and Jade Carey, posted an overall score of 171.296. This total was almost six points ahead of silver-medalist Italy and seven points clear of bronze-medalist Brazil.
Perhaps lost in the chaos of a shiny new gold medal were the fears of a recurring event for one of the greatest gymnasts of all time, Simone Biles. At the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Biles was forced to withdraw following an issue that messed with the gymnasts’ balance known following her first vault as “the twisties”. Simone Biles was nervous before her first vault attempt at the 2024 Paris Olympics:
“After I finished vault, I was really like ‘whew,’ because there were no flashbacks or anything,” Biles said. “But I did feel a lot of relief. And, as soon as I landed, I was like, ‘Oh yeah, definitely we’re going to do this.’ Yeah, that’s definitely what I was thinking.”
The win helps cement Team USA Women’s Gymnastics as the best program in the world once again. Additionally, the newest medal in the collection for Simone Biles pushes her individual medal total up to 8 Olympic ribbons. Biles is now the most decorated American gymnast in the program’s history. None of that matters to Biles at the end of the day:
“I just go out here and do what I’m supposed to and I’m doing what I love and enjoying it,” Biles said. “So that’s really all that matters to me. Yes, it’s amazing now that I hear it, but I don’t think I’ll truly understand the depth of it until I walk away from the sport.
… We still have a couple more competitions here, so I’m trying to focus on that and so we’ll just have to see.”
US Women’s Rugby Squad Lands First-Ever Bronze
Around the same time as the US Women’s gymnastics team was running over the competition, members of the Team USA Women’s Rugby 7’s team would do the same against a stingy Australian team in the Bronze Medal match. Alex Sedrick, 26, received a pass with 7 seconds remaining, trucked a defender making a tackle, and sprinted down the field for a game-tying try as the clock expired. Sedrick converted the extra point to seal a 14-12 win and the United States first-ever medal in the Rugby competition.
U.S. Social media sensation Ilona Maher received some buzz for similar tackle-avoiding maneuvers earlier in the tournament. Maher praised the poise of Sedrick in the final moments of such a critical game:
“I mean, I’ll give my first-born child to ‘Spiff’ [Sedrick],” American player Ilona Maher said. “It was crazy because I was like, ‘No, no way this is happening.’ And then for her to have to make the kick, as well — and she’s not our kicker.”
Team USA Leading Medal Count over Host-Nation France
Team USA added seven more medals to the overall total medal count on Tuesday to push the total count to a 2024 Paris Olympics-leading 27 ribbons earned at these Summer Games. The United States of America added four top-three finishes in swimming, one in gymnastics, one in Freestyle BMX (Cycling), and that shocking last-second finish to secure bronze in Rugby.
Team USA has captured medals in the following competitions as of the close of Tuesday’s events – Swimming (15), Fencing (3), Cycling (3), Skateboarding (2), Gymnastics (2), Diving (1), and Rugby (1).
Team Japan currently leads the Gold Medal count with (7), followed by China (6), France (5), South Korea (5), Great Britain (4) and Team USA (4).
