Game Recap

49ers

Jordan Mason racked up yardage on the ground all day with 100 yards on 20 carries. One of his carries was a 10-yard rush that led him into the endzone for a TD.

George Kittle was a force to be reckoned with for most of the game except when he was taken out due to cramps/dehydration. He consistently made blocks that opened up running lanes for their running game as well as getting 76 yards on seven receptions and one TD. Brock Purdy had a fair game overall. However, he did throw one INT and ended up getting sacked 6 times. He finished the game with 319 yards on 28 of 36 passing, one TD, and one INT. He also had two rushes for 12 yards in the game.

Deebo Samuel Sr. was a consistent threat for a big play throughout the game but he finished the game with 110 yards on eight receptions and zero TDs.

Vikings

Ty Chandler was the workhorse in the Vikings’ run game as he amassed 82 yards on 10 carries. Aaron Jones had nine carries but he was only able to get 32 yards on those carries. Sam Darnold did not look as good as he did in Week 1 but he still had some impressive plays. The most impressive was his 97-yard passing touchdown to Justin Jefferson in the 2nd quarter. He ended up with 268 yards, two TDs, and one INT on 17 of 26 passing.

Justin Jefferson had a day with four receptions for 133 yards and he broke a couple of NFL records by doing so. He took the least amount of games to get to 6,000 yards receiving and he also got his 400th reception today. Unfortunately, he left the game at the beginning of the fourth quarter with an apparent hamstring injury. Jalen Nailor helped to make up for the absence of Jordan Addison with his three catches for 54 yards and one TD. Pat Jones III had another great day on defense as he was able to get two sacks for the second straight week. Josh Metellus did well with seven tackles and one INT.

Story of the Game

The turnovers had a chance to ruin this game for the Vikings as Darnold had one INT to go along with two fumbles. Aaron Jones also had a costly fumble at the one-yard line as the Vikings were about to score another TD. However, the 49ers had their turnovers to overcome as well. Brock Purdy threw one INT and had a fumble of his own. Jordan Mason and Jacob Cowing also had fumbles in this game. Fortunately for the 49ers, Isaac Yiadom was able to recover the Aaron Jones fumble and the Jacob Cowing fumble.

This was a game that felt like it could have been a blowout before Aaron Jones’ fumble. After his fumble, it was a much closer and more competitive game. The Vikings had a chance to get a touchdown on their last drive but they got a false start penalty that ultimately upended that drive and they settled for a FG. On the 49ers’ last drive of the game, they were moving the ball with ease. They had a big completion to Mason to get a first down, to go along with one Deebo Samuel first down completion, and two completions to Eric Saubert that got them first downs as well.

The Vikings’ defense bent but it did not break as it forced the 49ers to kick a FG. The 49ers choose to do an onside kick which is recovered by the Vikings’ Nick Muse and the game is over. Minnesota’s defense looked dominant once again as they finished the day with one INT, one fumble recovery, six sacks, and seven QB Hits. They also managed to keep the 49ers to only two TDs and one FG.
