Running for the Lillies but in the rain. That was in the forecast for the Oaks and the Derby all weekend. But as far as the Kentucky Oaks goes, we witnessed a monumental battle unfold on the track. In a triumph that will be remembered for years to come, Thorpedo Anna emerged as the victor, closely followed by Just F Y I in Place and Regulatory Risk, taking Show.
The 2024 Kentucky Oaks
Inclement weather overshadowed the race on the first Friday of May, but that didn’t deter those who once again had descended upon Louisville, Kentucky to witness another historic weekend in horse racing. Nonetheless, all events commenced, even if they had been met with minor delays. The track was sloppy at best due to the rainy conditions but what’s a bit of rain to get the excitement of a historic weekend really going?
Who is Thorpedo Anna?
Now, we all want the answer to the question: Who is the beautiful filly, Thorpedo Anna? Thorpedo Anna is a 3-year-old Filly (foaled in 2021) that Brookdale Racing Inc. and a few others own. Her jockey is Brian J. Hernandez, Jr., and she trains under Kenneth McPeek. Thorpedo Anna began her racing career as a 2-year-old last year in 2023, having only started in three races, and of those three races she competed in, she placed first in two of them.
Thorpedo Anna is most certainly a beautiful and robust Filly. Beauty, majesty, grace, and pageantry are some of the qualities in a Filly, and even within the male thoroughbreds that run in the Kentucky Derby that we have grown accustomed to seeing the first weekend of May every year. The fillies that run in the Oaks race display each of those qualities tremendously and expeditiously.
Lillies for the Fillies
Thorpedo Anna placed first in the Kentucky Oaks on Friday, May 3, 2024. Visitors, owners, and everyone in between gathered around and wore and adorned shades of different pinks in support of the causes and efforts to which the Kentucky Oaks sends donations. Pink is most commonly associated with raising awareness for breast cancer. The Kentucky Oaks has set the color pink as the standard not only because it is found within the Stargazer Lily flower but also as a way of recognizing and bringing awareness to all women’s health troubles.
What is next for our Kentucky Oaks winner? Well, it appears that she and Just F Y I are projected to have quite a rematch this summer at Saratoga. This will prove to be as exciting a rematch as ever because anyone who watched the Kentucky Oaks saw the wire-to-wire victory. Thorpedo Anna pulled out with Just F Y I coming in right behind her. Both horses had only just made their second starts, respectively, running in the Kentucky Oaks, and neither horse had placed lower than second in their respective races.
Fun fact: Thorpedo Anna was the stablemate of this year’s Kentucky Derby winner, Mystik Dan. Also, each of these horses had the same jockey, Brian Hernandez, Jr., thus producing a sweep of the Oaks and Derby by the same jockey. It is said that if the Kentucky Derby winner runs in the Preakness, then Thorpedo Anna will likely not run a race near that time since she and Mystik Dan are jockeyed by the same person. This is mostly to give either of the horses a chance at further rest and certainly less strain on them to perform so quickly back to back.
