One of the biggest shocks was Klay Thompson finding his way to the Dallas Mavericks as rumors swirled that he would be a Los Angeles Laker. Another big move was Paul George taking his talents to the East Coast to play for the Philadelphia 76ers.
Despite the large amount of talent that has already signed new deals, a big name is still available. DeMar DeRozan is looking to hop on a flight out of Chicago and search for a new team. It seems like the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings could be the two biggest contenders for the 2024 free agent.
Three Team Trade Could Help Sacramento Kings
There are no major details on how this trade will occur, but a recent report believes that the San Antonio Spurs will help the Kings land DeRozan. The 2024 free agent could be a huge land for the team if they can sign him to a short-term contract. This Sacramento team is pursuing a contending spot in the playoffs, so long contracts with older players wouldn’t be the right decision. Including another team in this move would be a necessity to help with the budget.
To acquire DeMar DeRozan, the Kings might have to part with one of their young players as Chicago is in rebuild mode. DeRozan is a free agent right now, but for this trade to go through, the teams will most likely agree to sign and trade. The Bulls will receive an asset for their player, and the Kings will have less of a financial burden falling onto them. One option the Kings might pursue is trading veteran Harrison Barnes to get rid of his $18 million dollar contract.

In 2021, the Sacramento Kings acquired Domantas Sabonis from the Indiana Pacers. Since then, Sabonis has been a large part of the improvement being seen for this team. Also, the consistent improvement of De’Aaron Fox has been a major plus. However, it isn’t enough. The Kings had the chance to make the playoffs last season until they broke down in the Play-in Tournament.
It was also a rocky season in general for the West Coast team. A hot streak would start, and then suddenly, they’d go cold. They had stretches of four wins in a row that would turn to five losses in a row. There was a lack of consistency being seen. The addition of DeMar DeRozan could be a major factor in getting them to the 2024-25 playoffs.

There are many teams who would love to sign DeRozan to a quick contract. They include the Lakers, the LA Clippers, and the Miami Heat. However, it seems like the Kings will be crowned the winner in this situation. They have a solid surrounding cast, and DeRozan could work well with Sabonis and Fox. Not to mention, they have a huge chance of being contenders if they find that missing piece.
The Lakers shouldn’t be a threat in this situation. Very few players seem to want to play with them at the moment. The Miami Heat could be a problem, but I’d put them on a similar playing field as the Kings. The Clippers just lost Paul George, so signing a guy like DeRozan makes sense. However, as of right now, the Sacramento Kings are the clear front-runner for this 2024 free agent as he visits them this weekend.
