1892 Ohio State Football Showed Great Improvement

The 1892 Ohio State football team showed some promise.

In 1892, Ohio State played its third football season. They played eight games in 1892 and six took place in Columbus, Ohio. The other two games were elsewhere in Ohio. The season was much improved as Ohio State was 5-3. The eight games were a sign that football was becoming solidified in America, at least in the Midwest. These records may still not be what the modern-day football team attains. 132 years ago football was shaped the same way, but the game barely resembles how it is now.

Again, Ohio State did not play Michigan, so the rivalry that might be the best in American sports was not yet born. It began in 1897. The roster for 1892 is not available, but the schedule for Ohio State in 1892 is. Also, the other college football teams at the time are listed. The league is growing.

1892 Ohio State Football Roster

As discussed the names of the players on the 1892 Ohio State football team are not available. However, an image indicates there were eleven players on the team. Those players must have played on both offense and defense. The 1892 Ohio State football team played only in the fall. In 1890 Ohio State played football games in both the Spring and the Fall.

All of the players on the team in 1892 have left this world.  Some of the starters on the 1892 OSU football team were likely returnees from the previous season. Jack Ryan was the coach of the 1892 OSU football team and earned $15 a week. A far cry from what Ryan Day earns as the current head coach of the Buckeyes.

College Football Scene

22 teams played college football in 1891. There was only one team that is currently in the Big Ten Conference, in the league, the University of Illinois. The other 19 teams are strangers to the current Big Ten Conference. This makes for a strange list especially when the previous two years were so familiar.

The teams that played in 1892 that are not in the current Big Ten Conference included Oberlin, Case, Iowa Agricultural, Notre Dame, Chicago, Michigan State Normal, Washington University, Hillsdale, Doane, Heileberg, Miami of Ohio, Buchtel, Lake Forest, Cincinnati, Marquette, Ohio Wesleyan (who took a big tumble in the standings), Wittenberg, Wabash, and Kalamazoo. This was now the Midwestern college football conference. There were other teams in the nation. The teams are listed in order of their record in 1892.

1892 OSU Football Record

The 1892 OSU football team played eight games. They lost their first game at Oberlin 40-4. Then the Buckeyes reeled off three consecutive wins. They won at Buchtel to Otterbein 44-0. They hosted Marietta, a non-conference game, and beat them soundly, 80-0. Finally, they beat Dennison in a road game 32-0. Then the Buckeyes lost hosting Oberlin, who was very good, 32-0.  Then they won, beating the Dayton YMCA 42-6. They lost their next game to Case Western Reserve 40-18. The Buckeyes won their final game of the season by defeating Kenyon 26-10.

Conclusion

This is the third in a series of articles on Ohio State football’s history. This article is about the 1892 Ohio State football teahe next one will be about the 1893 Ohio State football team. The 1892 OSU football team got much better, but things were about to head south for the Buckeyes.
