For the Chicago Bears, Week 3 looks like a good opportunity to get the offense up and running for the first time this season. There are several points of action that the Bears must accomplish in preparation for their game on Sunday in Indianapolis against the Colts. One of them is to get some integral players out of the training room and onto the field.
Key Bears in the Tub
Wednesday’s practice report had three offensive linemen listed with injuries. Starting left guard Tevin Jenkins (quad) did not participate. Starting right guard Nate Davis (groin) was a limited participant. Backup tackle Kiran Amegadjie (quad) was also limited. The Bears are already thin across the O-line with would-be starter Ryan Bates on IR, so they can ill-afford to have three linemen on the report.
The Bears’ defensive line has been playing hard and overachieving this season. Unfortunately, after the game in Houston – the D-line has four players on the injury report to prove it. Only one did not participate in Wednesday’s practice, rotational run-stopping tackle, Zacch Pickens. Pickens missed the Bears’ first contest against Tennessee with a groin injury. Pickens aggravated that groin in the Houston game after only seven snaps and nothing on the stat sheet. The other three were all limited participants – starting defensive ends Montez Sweat (elbow) and DeMarcus Walker (foot) and starting defensive tackle Andrew Billings (groin).
Two starting wide receivers are still on this week’s injury report after headlining the list last week – veteran Keenan Allen (heel) and rookie Rome Odunze (knee). Allen has not practiced or played in any capacity since the opening game against the Titans and also sat out Wednesday’s session. After sustaining an MCL sprain against the Titans in week one, Rome Odunze surprisingly got in a limited practice on Friday before the Houston game and ended up playing 94% of the snaps on offense. Odunze was a limited participant in Wednesday’s practice.
Keenan Allen‘s veteran presence has been missed on the field, and it is encouraging that he has not been put on IR, so we should see him ramp up practice at some point to play this week or next. Another piece of the Bears’ offense that sat out practice most of last week and missed the game in Houston is beloved fullback Khari Blasingame. He is currently nursing injuries to his hand and knee back to health. Blasingame’s absence has been noticeable on special teams and in the Bears’ offense as a run blocker and an extra blocker on passing downs.
Indianapolis Colts Injuries
The Colts have six players on their initial week 3 injury report but are healthier than the Bears, who have ten. The Colts only have two players who did not participate in Wednesday’s practice, kicker Matt Gay (quad) and rotational DE Laiatu Latu (hip). Matt Gay had offseason sports hernia surgery and missed week one. Gay played last week against the Packers, but missed a field goal and injured the quad on his kicking leg. The four other players on the Colts’ injury report all practiced in full on Wednesday.
Final Thoughts
You can’t get the dub from the tub. Chicago Bears players need to get healthy this week for their trip to Lucas Oil Stadium to play a Colts team hurting on defense about as much as the Bears are on offense. The Colts have a legitimate offense if second-year QB Anthony Richardson can play mistake-free football. Last week against the Packers, Richardson threw three interceptions gave up a sack, and fumbled twice. If Richardson plays well, it will be another tough test for the Bears defense who has been carrying the team through two games.
